چکیده

The Very Large Array (VLA) Low-frequency Sky Survey (VLSS) has imaged 95% of the 3π sr of sky north of δ = −30◦ at a frequency of 74 MHz (4 meter wavelength). The resolution is 80 (FWHM) throughout, and the typical RMS noise level is 〈σ〉 ≈ 0.1 Jy/beam. The typical point-source detection limit is 0.7 Jy/beam and so far nearly 70,000 sources have been catalogued. This survey used the 74 MHz system added to the VLA in 1998. It required new imaging algorithms to remove the large ionospheric distortions at this very low frequency throughout the entire ∼ 11.9 field of view. This paper describes the observation and data reduction methods used for the VLSS and presents the survey images and source catalog. All of the calibrated images and the source catalog are available online (URL=http://lwa.nrl.navy.mil/VLSS) for use by the astronomical community. Subject headings: surveys — catalogs — atmospheric effects — radio continuum: general

Deep low-frequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope: a search for relic radio emission

We present deep multifrequency observations using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 153, 244, 610 and 1260 MHz of a field centered on J0916+6348, to search for evidence of fossil radio lobes which could be due to an earlier cycle of episodic activity of the parent galaxy, as well as halos and relics in clusters of galaxies. We do not find any unambiguous evidence of episodic activity in a ...

The Very Large Array Low-frequency Sky Survey Redux (VLSSr)

We present the results of a recent re-reduction of the data from the Very Large Array (VLA) Low-frequency Sky Survey (VLSS). We used the VLSS catalog as a sky model to correct the ionospheric distortions in the data and create a new set of sky maps and corresponding catalog at 73.8 MHz. The VLSS Redux (VLSSr) has a resolution of 75 arcsec, and an average map RMS noise level of σ ∼ 0.1 Jy beam. ...

Impact of local structure on the cosmic radio dipole

We investigate the contribution that a local overor under-density can have on linear cosmic dipole estimations. We focus here on radio surveys, such as the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), and forthcoming surveys such as those with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The NVSS has already been used to estimate...

Pulsars identified from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey

Abstract. We identified 97 strong pulsars from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz north of Dec(J2000) > −40◦. The total flux density, linear polarization intensity and polarization angle (PA) of all pulsars are extracted from the NVSS catalog. The well-calibrated PA measurement of 5 pulsars can be used for absolute PA calibrations in other observations. Comparing the source positions wit...

The angular power spectrum of NVSS radio galaxies

We measure the angular power spectrum Cl of radio galaxies in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) using two independent methods: direct spherical harmonic analysis and maximum likelihood estimation. The results are consistent and can be understood using models for the spatial matter power spectrum and for the redshift distribution of radio galaxies at mJy flux-density levels. A good fit to the angul...
